Marian Scheuer Sofaer presented this session about Jewish communities in India and India’s newest synagogue restoration.
Jewish merchants were active in the medieval pepper trade with India, and the earliest Jewish trade with India may date as far back as King Solomon’s time. Participants learned about the Jewish communities in the Cochin region, and about the restoration of the small, exquisite synagogue in Parur (Kerala state) soon to be open to the public.
Marian Scheuer Sofaer was project director for the exhibition in a restored synagogue in Chendamangalam, a small town near Kochi in southwestern India.
